The Vice President, Machine Learning will lead the Data Science Transformation team to drive AI/ML innovation in Optum Labs and across Optum and UHC businesses.  They will partner with leaders across Optum Labs, UHC, and Optum, including product, technology, and clinician leaders; and will serve as a thought leader and subject matter expert on the application of machine learning to solve healthcare business, clinical, and operations problems.  Success will be measured on delivering ML-based software products that drive business value.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Vice President will lead and manage a high-performing team of data scientists, who work across business segments to develop analytics, prototypes, proof of concepts, and machine learning software products to drive data science transformation and deliver explicit business value.  They will drive machine learning innovation by providing thought leadership and critical thinking; leading on selection and application of appropriate machine learning methods; mentoring and training a team of data scientists; and providing hands-on leadership to build new machine learning capabilities. They will be responsible for managing the team’s budget, team, and hiring.

  • Be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and thought leader
    • Be a subject matter expert and thought leader on application of machine learning to solve healthcare problems
    • Be the wisdom-nerve-center of the team to help finalize right model configuration using deep understanding of pros, cons, assumptions, appropriate use of a variety of models, methods and techniques
    • Evangelize data science best practices for software production scale
  • Hands-on Leadership
    • Translate strategic and analytic goals to tactical decisions and work plans
    • Collaborate with clinical, technology, and product partners to understand problems to be solved; and provide leadership on best machine learning solutions
    • Guide the data science team on best practices for project management, development of analytic plans, development/deployment of machine learning capabilities, and communication of results and impact
  • Build a Strong Data Science Team
    • Be an eager coach, mentor, and advocate for the data science team
    • Maintain and grow a culture of innovation, curiousity, and collaboration
    • Build a center of excellence for machine learning that follows and demonstrates best practices
  • Deliver Machine Learning Products/Features and Drive Business Value
    • Be an analytics advisor and partner for Optum business units
    • Drive collaboration across product and platform teams to build reuseable and scalable capabilities
    • Appropriately scope analytics requests and turn them into well-defined backlogs and analytics plans for the team
    • Ensure efficient, accurate and timely project delivery
    • Effectively communicate findings

Required Qualifications: 

  • PhD degree in healthcare, computer science, data science, applied mathematics, physics, statistics, or related field
  • 10+ years of experience applying machine learning and advanced analytics software solutions to solve business problems
  • 7+ years of experience and passion for managing, mentoring/coaching, and building technical teams
  • Deep expertise in machine learning along with demonstrable foundational understanding of underlying mathematical principles
  • Hands-on experience using programming tools (e.g. R, python) on a cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure) to deliver a scalable analytics product as a SaaS solution
  • Experience translating business objectives into discrete analytics and data science backlogs
  • Experience leading development and delivery ML product capabilities at scale with proven business value (e.g. revenue, cost reductions, etc.)
  • Demonstrable ability to collaborate with ML product and software engineering teams to develop disruptive, enterprise ML-as-software or SaaS products
  • Experience in developing, operationalizing, and communicating at an enterprise-level analytics vision and strategy
  • Force of presence and ability to effectively interact with and communicate technical and methodological nuance with a wide variety of audiences, including executives
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential requirement of this role. Candidates located in states that mandate COVID-19 booster doses must also comply with those state requirements. UnitedHealth Group will adhere to all federal, state and local regulations as well as all client requirements and will obtain necessary proof of vaccination, and boosters when applicable, prior to employment to ensure compliance

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience in healthcare applying machine learning and advanced analytics software solutions to solve business problems
  • Deep subject matter expertise in healthcare (e.g. health policy, healthcare operations, clinical domains, etc.)
  • Expert knowledge in and experience with multiple healthcare data domains, such as clinical/EMR data, billing, insurance claims, consumer data, and unstructured data
  • Knowledge / experience in other disciplines (e.g. health economics or statistics, computer science, applied mathmatics, numerical methods etc.)
  • Expertise outside healthcare considered for candidates with exceptional experience and expertise in machine learning and artificial intelligence in other industries
  • Proven ability to evangelize best practices for data and analytics across matrix organizations and externally
  • Demonstrated project leadership experience and ability to effectively deliver high-quality results
  • Proven innovator of analytics, technologies and processes - end to end from ideation to implementation and launch 
  • Experience with data warehousing, data pipeline management, and/or big data and cloud-based development
  • Exceptionally creative problem-solving skills
  • Intellectual curiosity and openness to feedback

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $174,600 to $332,200. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
