The glass technician II fabricates ultra-high purity glass preforms for optical fibers by preparing raw materials, melting and casting glass, and etching/polishing glass preforms. The technician works under the direction of the glass fabrication manufacturing engineering supervisor on production work, process improvement projects, and R&D. The technician must be comfortable working in a highly technical laboratory environment with an emphasis on accuracy and methodically following procedures. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations. Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to: Manufacture fluoride glass for optical fiber preforms o Grind and prepare raw material crystals Weigh and mix powder batches Melt raw materials and cast fluoride glass preforms Chemically etch cast glass pieces for surface preparation Clean and maintain glass manufacturing equipment Clean tools and glass melting crucibles Clean glass melting furnaces Assemble and clean glass molds Maintain Inventory of lab supplies, raw materials, and consumables Properly record all manufacturing data into the manufacturing execution system (MES) Rigorously follow all safety and PPE rules while working with hazardous materials Perform other BU essential functions and participate in assigned cross training. In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for: ⢠Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures. ⢠Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments. Physical Activities: Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools. Requirements Qualifications Experience: Minimum 3 years manufacturing experience or related technical education Education: High School diploma or equivalent Specialized Knowledge and Skills: ⢠Proficiency in basic computer use (Word, Excel) and communication tools ⢠Good verbal and written communication skills ⢠Basic math skills including decimals and unit conversions (imperial/metric). ⢠Strong attention to detail ⢠Ability and desire to comply with high quality standards. ⢠Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere ⢠Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.
